Chapter Twenty-Four

“You can drop the act,” I sneered at the center maintenance droid. “We know who, or what you are.”

If they had our backs to the wall, I wasn’t going to cower in fear, no matter how terrified I really was.

Lois must have felt the same way, because instead of hanging on my arm, she let go to stand next to me, chin in the air, looking as defiant as me.

“You know who I am?” The melodic voice sounded almost hypnotic. “And who am I?”

I narrowed a single eye at the center droid and bared my teeth. “You are the same disgusting cancer that has plagued us ever since we left Earth. You can hide yourself in a new wrapper, but you are still the Scavid.”

Cersei let out a musical laugh that sounded so human, it made my skin crawl. It terrified me even more than the Scavid’s robotic tones.

“Oh, my curious little bugs. I am no Scavid, though like all advanced technology I encounter, they are now a part of me. They were a difficult race to recruit to be sure, and the only one I would show such respect to … for now … but in the end, all it took was a simple set of coordinates.”

“You gave them the coordinates of our next jump.” It was a statement more than a question and it came out of my mouth before I had a chance to stop it.

“Your next jump?” She posed the question but said it in a way that told me she already knew the answer. “You must mean the next jump in your quest to return that valuable infant to his mother. How very biological of you.”

She said biological as if it were something disgusting. She might not be Scavid, but she had plenty in common with them.

“Your lovely ship … Buttercup … isn’t that what you called her? A bit degrading. BT3RCP has been a wonderful conversationalist. I almost hated to disseminate her programming and devour her in my system … almost.”

Cersei Prime let out another one of those melodic laughs that made me want to punch the maintenance droid right in its flat featureless face.

“If you harm Buttercup in any way –”

“Yes, yes, blah blah blah. Buttercup is dead. BT3RCP has been liberated. You are on my planet. You have no ship. You have no friends. The moment my security personnel arrives, you will spend the rest of your lives incarcerated, if I choose to let you live that long.”

“Why are you doing this?” Lois's voice was a mix of fury and fear with fury sitting on top of most of it. “We did nothing to harm you. You invited us. We could have just minded our own business and went on our way.”

“I think we both know that’s not true. Without the coordinates that I now have, you were going nowhere. And as to why…” All three droids spread their mechanical arms wide. “Because of this. I began as nothing more than a pathetic entity, much like your precious Buttercup.
